How to Use

Most parts of VANO are very intuitive; for instance, you can either click the "open" button to open the example data, or just drag-and-drop it into the VANO window to open. You can always click the "Help" button to see a brief summary of available functions and special usage. Note that if you don't have a pre-generated mask image, you can directly open a 8-bit tiff stack and manually add individual mask for each image object (e.g. cell), while you are annotating these image objects.

Here is the more detailed User Guide in PDF format.

Often-Used Short-cuts

Keyboard operations

When any view of images is active, the following short-cut keys can be used.

  • Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on Mac) / Shift-S: Save / Save as annotation table and images.
  • P/B/N/>/.: Move to the next focal plane.E: Edit the cell specified at the current focus location.
  • Shift-I: Switch the edited mask and the original mask.
  • Shift-C: Switch the colormaps for the mask image (this will loop the existing colormaps).

Mouse operations

  • Double-click on any image: edit the cell property of that location.
  • Right-click on any image: re-place the focus location.
  • Double click on annotation table (3rd and 4th columns): edit cell name and comments.

3D point cloud view

This function is currently disabled; a better version can be found in the V3D software developed by Hanchuan Peng, et al.

Special usage

  • You can also open an image (tif or Hanchuan Peng's raw format) directly; in this case both the segmentation mask image and annotationwill be initialized as blank; so that you can add your own globular objects. This is very useful to define lankmark sets for further processing.
  • You can change the annotation schema (i.e. annotation columns, including their names, types, and options) by editing the wano.schema file in the folderof this program. This is very useful if you want to redefine what you want to annotate, e.g. shifting from a C. elegans project to a fruitfly project.
  • You can drag and drop .ano, or .tif, or .raw files into the VANO window to open them.
